Our Story

St. Bernard Foundation was established from a simple but enduring belief: every child deserves the opportunity to communicate, learn, participate, and live with dignity.

Across many communities, children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, Non-Verbal, and Blind or Visually Impaired continue to face barriers that limit their participation in education, family life, and society. These challenges are often not the result of a child's abilities, but of environments that are not yet fully inclusive.

The Foundation was created in response to this reality, with a commitment to help remove barriers, strengthen opportunities, and contribute to a future where every child is valued, understood, and empowered to reach their full potential.

The Meaning Behind Our Name

The Foundation takes its name from Bernard, in recognition of values that continue to inspire its work—respect for every person, belief in equal opportunity, integrity, compassion, and confidence in the transformative power of education.

These values shaped the vision that gave rise to the Foundation. Today, they remain part of its identity, guiding how we serve children, families, schools, communities, and partners.

While inspired by these enduring principles, St. Bernard Foundation is an independent public-benefit institution, governed by its Board of Directors and dedicated to serving society through professional leadership, collaboration, and accountability.

Our name honours a legacy of values; our mission is to build a legacy of opportunity.

From Broad Concern to Clear Purpose

Like many organizations at their inception, the Foundation began with a broad desire to improve lives and contribute to community well-being.

As we listened to families, engaged with educators, health professionals, and community leaders, a clearer picture emerged. We recognized that many of the challenges children face begin with one fundamental issue: communication.

When a child cannot communicate effectively, opportunities for learning, participation, social connection, and independence are often limited. Families may struggle to access appropriate support, schools may lack specialized resources, and communities may not fully understand how to create inclusive environments.

These insights led the Foundation to make a deliberate and strategic decision: rather than trying to address every challenge, we would focus our expertise where we believed we could make the greatest long-term contribution.

Today, St. Bernard Foundation concentrates its work on supporting children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, Non-Verbal, and Blind or Visually Impaired.

This focus allows us to deepen our expertise, strengthen partnerships, and develop practical, sustainable solutions that can be adapted and replicated by others.

Building More Than Programmes

From the beginning, we believed that meaningful change requires more than delivering services.

Children thrive when families are informed and confident. Schools become stronger when teachers have the right knowledge and tools. Communities grow more inclusive when attitudes change. Systems become more effective when institutions work together with a shared purpose.

For this reason, our work extends beyond individual programmes. We invest in people, partnerships, knowledge, and systems that continue creating opportunities long after a project has ended.

We believe that the most lasting impact is achieved when communities are equipped to sustain and expand positive change themselves.

Our Journey Ahead

St. Bernard Foundation is still at the beginning of its journey, but our vision reaches far into the future.

We aspire to become a trusted centre of excellence in inclusive communication, education, family empowerment, research, and systems strengthening. Through collaboration with government, educational institutions, civil society, development partners, and local communities, we seek to contribute to lasting improvements in the lives of children and the systems that support them.

We also believe that knowledge should be shared. As we grow, we aim to develop practical models, research, training resources, and innovative approaches that can inform policy, strengthen professional practice, and inspire others to advance inclusion in their own communities.

Our success will not be measured only by the programmes we implement, but by the opportunities that continue to grow because of the knowledge we share, the partnerships we build, and the capacity we help strengthen.

Our Legacy

The story of St. Bernard Foundation is not defined by where it began, but by the future it seeks to build.

We envision a future where every child is able to communicate with confidence, learn without unnecessary barriers, participate fully in community life, and pursue their aspirations with dignity and hope.

By strengthening children, families, schools, communities, and institutions together, we believe lasting change is possible.

Because lasting change does not happen in a moment.

  • It begins with a child.
  • It grows through a family.
  • It is strengthened by a school.
  • It is supported by a community.
  • And it is sustained by strong institutions
